Washington-based CTIA – a trade association representing the wireless communications industry in the US – has created the CTIA Cybersecurity Certification Program for cellular-connected IoT devices.
The CTIA Cybersecurity Certification Program is said to be the first of its kind to be developed in partnership with several leading wireless operators, tech firms, security experts and test labs, across the country. The Programme, which is built upon IoT security recommendations from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), creates a secure foundation for smart cities, connected vehicles, and mHealth.
Various industry players have shown their support for the CTIA’s programme.
Tomas Ageskog, head of digital services, Ericsson North America, said: “IoT security is fast becoming a priority as the global market grows to 3.5 billion cellular-connected IoT devices, with a 48% 5G mobile adoption rate in the US by 2023, according to the latest Ericsson Mobility Report. CTIA’s scalable and standards-aligned program complements Ericsson’s secure-by-design approach to developing, deploying and managing communications infrastructure.”
Mike Murphy, CTO, Nokia North America, said: “Designing for security from inception is a critical element of 5G networks, and by extension, the IoT. CTIA’s certification program will build on industry’s efforts in this area, thereby ensuring that trustworthiness of IoT devices and the networks is well established. This will be critical in driving consumer adoption and confidence and enabling the massive IoT growth that has been forecasted and to enable verticals to thrive in the future.”
Back in June, a report from ABI Research predicted cellular and non-cellular LPWA network connections would grow globally at a CAGR of 53% until 2023. The report added that market growth will be driven by growth in smart meters and asset trackers, with the continued battle for dominance between the primary standards. NB-IoT, CAT-M, Sigfox and LoRa are other stimulants fuelling this rise. Another report from the analyst firm suggests carriers should adopt new strategies to form their position within the IoT and remain competitive and deployment of open standards-based platforms, solutions and approaches is the only way to unlock more value faster from IoT markets.
